### (b) Glycolysis
Glycolysis (from Greek 'glykys' meaning sweet, and 'lysis' meaning splitting) is the first stage of cellular respiration, common to both aerobic and anaerobic pathways. It is a universal metabolic pathway occurring in the cytoplasm of nearly all living cells.

**Definition:** Glycolysis is the process where one molecule of glucose (a 6-carbon sugar) is partially oxidized into two molecules of pyruvate (a 3-carbon compound).

**Location:** Cytoplasm of the cell.

**Oxygen Requirement:** Glycolysis does not directly require oxygen, making it an anaerobic process.

**Phases and Steps:** Glycolysis involves a sequence of 10 enzymatic reactions and can be broadly divided into two phases:
